After Gazment Bardhi, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, reacted to the statement of Commissioner Marta Kos.
The latter, while praising the work of SPAK the day before, also stated that the elimination of corruption in a country does not only depend on the anti-corruption laws that are adopted, but also on the mindset of the people in relation to the phenomenon.
For Berisha, this is a racist statement and he accused Kos of behaving like an accomplice of Prime Minister Edi Rama, whom he called a thief.
"Commissioner Marta's statement, one day after the first party won the elections in Slovenia and who did not speak out until yesterday, is a downright racist and corrupt statement. Whether we are dealing with political corruption or monetary corruption, this is a matter for the EU's investigative institutions."
"But to accuse a society of accepting corruption, at a time when it supports the thief with all the weight that the Commission has, to say the least, is to be seen as his accomplice. That's all I have for this comment," said Berisha.
The European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, praised SPAK's work in the fight against corruption in Albania.
While emphasizing that it is under EU monitoring, she also commented on the Balluk issue.
"Albania has done an excellent job, we are in the process of moving towards the standards of the rule of law. But of course there are also some cases, like that of Balluk, which we are monitoring very carefully. SPAK is doing an excellent job, it is normal for them to uncover such cases. It is important to see the reactions to these cases, and we are monitoring these," she said.
While still talking about Albania during the interview, the senior European Union official said that eliminating corruption in a country does not only depend on the anti-corruption laws that are adopted, but also on the people's mindset in relation to the phenomenon.
"Another issue with anti-corruption which is typical I would say for all candidate countries, is that you can have the best legislation to fight corruption, but if corruption is accepted in that country, then you have another problem. So all these countries are going through the process of changing their mindset in relation to corruption and this takes time," said Kos.
