The harsh attack on Ervin Salianjan is not related to the race for mayor, but to the fear that an open process in the party could bring down Berisha's people who keep the mechanism of power afloat...
The public declaration of Ervin Salianji as a traitor by Sali Berisha is seen as a strong move to curb any attempt at reorganization in the Democratic Party. Berisha's real fear does not seem to be the race for the party leadership, but the choice of new structures, where his control over the executive dome could be weakened. In the background are also the signals coming from Germany for a change of leadership, as well as the possibility of creating a new axis within the DP with Salianji, Bardhi, Tabaku and other critical figures.
Sali Berisha has savagely attacked Ervin Salianji, calling him adopted by Fatmir Xhafaj. In other words, he has declared him a traitor.
This is an extreme act, which will cost even more in dividing the opposition and in chaos among the militant base throughout the country.
In all likelihood, Salianji will not register at all in the race for chairman of the Democratic Party, keeping himself out of the process.
But why is Sali Berisha doing this? Is he afraid that Ervin Salianji might challenge him in the May elections? In all likelihood, this is not the fear of the leader of the Democratic Party.
He controls almost everything in the organization of the elections, which pass through his hands. In addition, despite the skill and sympathy that some members of the DP may have for Ervin Salianji, he has no real power to harm Berisha.
Based on this fact, Berisha would even benefit from a race with Ervin Salianji, because the race would gain momentum and increase participation, as well as the enthusiasm of the base in a process that could strengthen Sali Berisha more than harm him.
But Sali Berisha fears another process, which he considers much more important: the election of the presidency, the general secretary and the head of the National Council.
In all the speeches that Sali Berisha has given at the grassroots level, but also in those that Ervin Salianji has given, more than the doctor himself, his closest associates have been criticized and attacked: Flamur Noka, Edi Paloka, or even Agron Gjekmarkaj.
A swift and participatory process by the Democrats could bring a surprise vote in the National Council, which could leave Berisha without his most loyal wingman. This is what he fears the most, because like Paloka, like Flamur Noka, but also Bardhi and Gjekmarkaj, are chess pieces that he uses to play his game.
Changing these stones would further expose Sali Berisha, leaving him insecure and with bare shoulders. Consequently, his power would be weakened.
This would create all the possibilities for a new phase of the game, where the newly elected leadership of the Democratic Party would deal with finding another leader.
A merger of Salijanj's group with Jorida Tabaku, Ilir Alimehmet, but also with Gazment Bardhi and others, would return Sali Berisha to a minority, where he would never be safe.
With the brutal expulsion of Ervin Salianji and his declaration of a traitor, Sali Berisha has not only spoken to the "prodigal son", as he called him, but also to others. Mainly with Gazment Bardhi and Jorida Tabaku, who were on a mission in Germany, where there was talk of a change of leadership.
Berisha has made it known to this very group that he has no intention of changing anything. In fact, he will retain almost the entire executive team, which protects his shoulders every day, whether in Parliament, in the party, or in protests.
Without Flamur Noka, who is the machinery for organizing party activities and rallies, or without Paloka, who declared a few years ago that he manipulated the votes for Lulzim Basha in 2019 with the doctor's knowledge, Berisha does not have the power to control the mechanism.
Therefore, he has gone to the extremes of a game that could further damage the Democratic Party, starting with the Kavaja branch, where Salianji has his greatest influence.
To date, in Kavaja, Berisha has not managed to elect his own man as branch president, while he has done so in Shkodër, Lezha, Vlora and several other municipalities.
Salianji, for his part, responded strongly to Sali Berisha, publicly challenging him. But the problem is this: besides words, will he follow up the challenge with concrete actions within the DP base?
