Brussels hits the government: Albania dropped 11 places in the fight against
Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament, David McAllister

The senior EU official stressed the need to maintain the pace of reforms in this regard and called on the political class not to interfere in the justice system.

The Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament, David McAllister, has "pushed the ear" of Prime Minister Edi Rama, as he stressed that politics should not interfere with justice.

McAllister stated that Albania has not yet reached the appropriate level in the fight against corruption.

During a press conference, the senior European Union official stressed the need to maintain the pace of reforms in this regard and called on the political class not to interfere in the justice system.

He underlined that it is necessary to fully implement the legislation in force, to complete the staffing of justice institutions and to guarantee their independence from political influence. According to him, politicians should set an example with their actions.

"There is a need to maintain the driving force in the fight against corruption. Much has been achieved in this area but it is not at a satisfactory level. Last week, the TI report came out, Albania has lost 11 places in the ranking.

"It is necessary to have full implementation of legislation, to have staffing of justice structures, to have no political interference, and politicians must lead by setting an example themselves," said McAllister.

Regarding electoral reform, McAllister emphasized that it must be implemented in sufficient time before the next elections and be inclusive, including the opposition in the process.

Furthermore, the chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, David McAllister, conveyed a clear message to the Albanian government, emphasizing that the integration process requires greater commitment and that "there is no room for complacency" at this stage of the negotiations.

While reconfirming the European Union's support for Albania's membership, McAllister stressed that progress is measured on the basis of fulfilling the Copenhagen criteria, implying that the country must intensify efforts to advance reforms.

He also raised concerns about the internal political climate, highlighting polarization and the lack of dialogue. According to him, political stability is essential for the integration process to move forward and requires commitment from both sides.

"There is no room for complacency, it must work even harder to conclude the negotiations. I would like to mention that EU integration is a process that is evaluated on this journey based on the fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria. We are concerned about political polarization. We think that there should be more stability and political dialogue in the country. On the one hand, the majority should engage the opposition in dialogue, and the opposition should be included in dialogue. Violent protests have no place in this functional democracy,"  said McAllister.
