The EP Foreign Policy Committee continues the agenda in Albania, where during the meeting at the Presidency of the Assembly with the leader of the SP group, Taulant Balla, there were debates on the Peace Board.
MEP Michael Gahler has demanded explanations as to why Albania immediately accepted admission to the Peace Board.
It is learned that the head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, said that as far as the US is concerned, we have a special relationship, and asked Gahler to ask the European Council why, as the EU, you do not have a common position on this.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama will depart for the United States of America today.
This visit comes at the invitation of US President Donald Trump to participate in the Peace Board meeting, which will be organized on February 19 in Washington.
Albania is a founding member of the Board with a temporary mandate of three years.
This Board, initiated by President Trump, aims to rebuild Gaza and resolve conflicts in the world.
On the other hand, Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali continues to support Trump's initiative, saying that Albania has no financial obligations, but of course, referring to the organization's statute, Albania has its obligations as a founding member country.
Spiropali emphasized that the Peace Board does not intend to replace other organizations such as the UN, but rather a complementary tool where Albania can make its contribution to peace and the stabilization of the situation in Gaza.
The EU has rejected the Peace Board
US President Donald Trump has sent invitations to 50 countries to join in forming a "Peace Board" as part of Phase Two of his 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza. But Trump has not received only positive responses as several countries have rejected him.
Italy will not participate, Corriere della Sera reported, citing concerns that joining such a group headed by the leader of a single country would violate Italy's constitution.
Norway also rejected the proposal to join the peace board, claiming that the body acts against international law, Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik told the daily Aftenposten on Tuesday.
French President Emmanuel Macron has also rejected Trump's offer. According to Politico, the decision was made because the board's charter goes beyond the Gaza framework and raises serious questions, especially regarding the principles and structure of the United Nations, which cannot be questioned.
The Netherlands became the next European country to ignore the "Peace Board" initiative.
Greece, on the other hand, seems to be saying "no" to Trump's proposal. According to them, the Greek government will act in coordination with other European governments, which appear negative towards the American president's initiative.
Kathimerini reported that Greece emphasizes that it cannot deviate from the fundamental principles of international law, respect for territorial integrity and the central role of the UN.
Meanwhile, there are other countries that are hesitant or considering declining the invitation but have not yet officially responded. Among these countries are Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, Ukraine, and China.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy questioned whether Ukraine could participate in the “Peace Board” alongside Russia and Belarus. Zelensky’s comments came after Russia and Belarus announced that they had also been invited to join the international body.
