"There is no room for complacency", senior EU official's message
David McAllister

The Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament, David McAllister, has conveyed a clear message to the Albanian government, emphasizing that the integration process requires greater commitment and that "there is no room for complacency" at this stage of the negotiations.

While reconfirming the European Union's support for Albania's membership, McAllister stressed that progress is measured on the basis of fulfilling the Copenhagen criteria, implying that the country must intensify efforts to advance reforms.

He also raised concerns about the internal political climate, highlighting polarization and the lack of dialogue. According to him, political stability is essential for the integration process to move forward and requires commitment from both sides.

"There is no room for complacency, we must work even harder to conclude the negotiations. I would like to mention that EU integration is a process that is evaluated on this journey based on the fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria. We are concerned about political polarization. We think that there should be more stability and political dialogue in the country. On the one hand, the majority should engage the opposition in dialogue, and the opposition should be included in the dialogue. Violent protests have no place in this functional democracy," he said.
