EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, participated in a panel of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs where he spoke about Albania's integration into the European Union.
Gonzato said that the possibility of EU membership is now real and called on Albanian youth not to leave the country, but to 'seize this golden opportunity for them and for Albania towards the EU.'
After expressing his belief that the country will open all group chapters this year, Gonzato emphasized that the perception of some member states towards Albania remains a problem.
He took as an example the work of the Special Prosecution Office and law enforcement agencies in the European Union in cracking down on several international criminal groups, which, according to the ambassador, should be increasingly emphasized as an example of a new Albania.
"There is reluctance, anxiety in some EU countries that see that organized crime is destabilizing the lives of citizens among themselves within European cities and shows that seeing Albania proactively hitting the networks of criminal groups that are international criminal networks, this is a clear and strong signal that we are dealing with a new Albania and this should be emphasized more and more," said the ambassador.
Gonzato said that another challenge is the work done. According to him, it is not enough to just approve laws, but it must be proven that they are implemented and implemented correctly. Therefore, a professional and impartial public administration is essential for this.
"It is not enough to just pass laws. You have to prove that these laws are implemented properly and correctly. This is where things get complicated and that is why administrative capacities are needed. This is where a professional public administration is needed that is neutral, as much as possible, but we are talking about people who work in public administration and who grow in their careers based on meritocracy," he said.
Gonzato also praised the government's initiative for e-government as important for changing the mindset of citizens.
"The mindset of citizens needs to be changed. Services should be provided by the government and not paid for," he said.
