At the session "Human Rights as a Basis for Security" at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Vienna, the Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party, Oerd Bylykbashi, denounced corruption, obstruction of justice, the influence of organized crime and violations of electoral standards by Edi Rama's government.
He emphasized that these phenomena are narrowing democratic spaces and creating political instability in the country, calling on the OSCE Political Assembly to closely follow developments in Albania.
Focusing on the May 11, 2025 elections, Bylykbashi said that the elections were characterized by widespread abuse of state power and public resources.
According to him, the ODIHR noted that the line between the state and the ruling party was severely blurred, allowing the incumbent socialist government to benefit disproportionately and significantly undermining the fairness of the competition, with serious implications for the elections.
" The report also highlighted pressure on voters, including in public administration, widespread cases of vote buying and other serious irregularities. There was credible involvement of organized crime in supporting a number of ruling party candidates.
At the same time, the opposition has faced continued pressure, including politically motivated prosecutions of its leaders. Corruption remains a major concern. Recent efforts by prosecutors to investigate high-level cases, including the Deputy Prime Minister, have been thwarted, while legislative initiatives aim to block special prosecutors.
These developments, reflected in numerous international reports, have fueled growing public discontent. Large opposition protests continue to take place, including one planned for today.
Albania illustrates how persistent violations of democratic electoral standards can lead to institutional regression and political instability ,” Bylykbashi said.
