The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, was only allowed to speak for one minute in Strasbourg, although the time allotted for speakers is usually up to three minutes. The interruption came after Berisha strayed from the topic of the debate and shifted the floor towards political accusations about the situation in Albania.
Berisha called the situation in Albania an “electoral crisis,” questioning the freedom of the elections and describing them as a “farce.” He accused the party-state and the narco-state of distorting the electoral process, claiming that crime and drugs turn into votes, which are then converted into political and economic favors and used to block justice.
Following his speech, Berisha directly mentioned Prime Minister Edi Rama, accusing him of obstructing the prosecution's actions regarding measures against the Deputy Prime Minister, as well as including him in charges related to other institutional issues.
At this very moment, the President of the Assembly interrupted his speech and passed the discussion to the next speaker, noting that Berisha had strayed from the anticipated topic of the debate.
The interruption of the speech in Strasbourg has not prevented Berisha from using his intervention for internal political consumption.
It was no coincidence that Berisha broadcast the footage from the meeting lobby and was filmed by Albana Vokshi, because they had not allowed him to speak in the internal meeting.
The case in Strasbourg confirms once again Berisha's attempt to use international forums as a political platform, even when this brings clashes with the rules and defined topics of the institutions where he speaks, while on the other hand, he sells himself to democrats and Albanians as international support.
