"Court files are a mess", Lutfi Dervishi: Don't confuse SPAK with

Journalist Lutfi Dervishi has commented on expectations from SPAK, following the election of the new head of this institution.

According to him, for decades Albania had been penalized by the perception of impunity, but in recent years SPAK has set a new record against corruption, targeting important officials, including former ministers, mayors and senior officials.

"With the last decision, they went to the prime minister's antechamber. So, the acting mayor, the acting deputy prime minister. This act showed once again that SPAK not only has teeth, but also nails and has the courage to reach high levels and this is a luxury for our 35-year history, but also comparing the countries around it is a luxury that means an almost independent structure like the FBI used to be, meaning to seek out and bring the highest officials in office to justice ," he told "A2 CNN".

While drawing attention to the high stock of files in the courts, Dervishi emphasized that at this rate, it will take over 10 years to fill the staff and normalize the situation.

"Regular courts, regular prosecutors' offices have the same problems that are known, with the problem of lack of personnel, it will take more than a decade at these rates to at least fill the personnel, the stock of files is increasing and the big misunderstanding with SPAK has to do with the fight against corruption ," Dervishi said.

He stressed that SPAK should not be seen as the only mechanism for fighting corruption. Dervishi added that SPAK is for punishment and cannot prevent.

"I think it is a wrong focus even from the internationals who expect the fight against corruption only from SPAK. SPAK is for punishment. SPAK cannot prevent. SPAK is, if we use a metaphor, when an egg breaks, you cannot claim to keep this egg and collect it and chicks will hatch from it again. Which means it is punishment, but the rhetoric that corruption is prevented with government policies, with functioning institutions, with other mechanisms that will have to do their job, not to leave it that we have left this job to SPAK, because if we leave it to SPAK then you will have these consequences", concluded Lutfi Dervishi.
