Prime Minister Edi Rama has denied accusations that he is the "Godfather" of Albania, as the country faces weeks of anti-corruption protests sparked by a luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
The so-called “Flamingo Revolution” began in reaction to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s plans to build a $4 billion project on an island near a nature reserve known for its flamingos. Protesters have called for Rama’s resignation and his prosecution, arguing that systemic corruption is allowing international investors to build in protected areas.
“People say I’m the leader of all this. I tell them to go to hell. It’s that simple,” Rama declared. “It’s not my job to prove I’m not the Godfather; it’s their job to prove I am.”
The protests culminated in Tirana, where thousands of citizens have taken to the streets for more than three consecutive weeks, opposing the tourism project and demanding more transparency in public decision-making.
Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime has issued arrest warrants for more than a dozen businessmen suspected of international drug trafficking and money laundering. Among them is a person who previously owned land in the area where Kushner and Ivanka Trump's project is expected to be developed.
A spokesman for Kushner and his partners in Albania did not respond to requests for comment.
Rama insisted that the investments linked to Kushner were carried out in accordance with the law and that there is no connection between the project and the investigations into the former landowners.

He acknowledged that money laundering exists as an economic phenomenon, but argued that its impact is not as great as claimed.
"Money laundering is part of our economy, but it is not such a big problem. Do you think there is no money laundering in London? There is. But can it be said that the British economy relies mainly on money laundering? No," Rama said.
Albanian prosecutors say 20 businessmen are suspected of involvement in international drug trafficking and money laundering networks. Investigators suspect that billions of euros were channeled into major construction projects along the Adriatic coast and in the Albanian capital.
Among those under investigation is Artur Shehu, a dual Albanian-American citizen who lives in Miami. In 2025, he sold land near the flamingo sanctuary to Albania Land Development, a company linked to Kushner's project. The deal is under scrutiny by anti-corruption prosecutors, who have frozen payments worth 128 million euros pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Shehu did not respond to requests for comment.
Rama argued that his government has given justice institutions more space to pursue cases of corruption and organized crime, which according to him has created the perception that Albania is more corrupt than before.
"In fact, it's the opposite. Albania is fighting corruption like never before and today is much less corrupt than it used to be ," he said.
The prime minister also repeated claims that the protests have also been instigated by opponents of US President Donald Trump, including Iran.
"There are many interests to kill this project, because it is related to Trump," Rama said. "If it weren't for Jared Kushner, no one would be dealing with flamingos, Albania or anything else. All this attention comes from opposition to Trump."
He said he remains convinced that plans for the development of the tourist complex on the coast will be realized despite the protests.
“The important thing is that the investors are not criminals and are not involved in money laundering,” Rama declared. “They are big investors. This is a historic opportunity for Albania.”/ Financial Times

Po AKSHin , po Duranen, po sterilizimin, po kullat qe paguhen vetem per projektin 100 euro per m2 nga 6 euro qe paguhej me pare? Po shitjen e tokave me 1 euro per m2. Ti vjedh ghysmat e pasurise te ketij vendi dhe gjymen tjeter ja shet kriminalitetit. Ty te leverdis nje Shqiperi pa rini shqiptare , vetem me 220,000 punonjes te administrates e patronazhiste dhe me nje Sali Berisha ngordhje qe kenaqet te mbaje nje bajrak dhe i hedh nganje kocke her mbas here. Jo cdo gje ka mbaruar , nuk mund te kthehet me mbrapa. Shqiperia eshte e jona.
