Former minister and SP MP, Fatmir Xhafaj, says that justice reform was the 'golden key' to negotiations with the EU, for which he said there are still defects.
"Let's say without hesitation, without the justice reform, Albania would not have opened negotiations with the EU. Today, no one can deny that the justice reform became the golden key to opening negotiations with the EU. Nihilists and critics should recognize this. The justice reform was the most difficult reform that the Albanian state has ever undertaken. It remains proof that Albania is and must remain ready to face the most difficult challenges in building a democratic state. Of course, no one can say that everything is perfect ," said Xhafaj.
Xhafaj emphasized that the EU does not evaluate Albania only for the number of laws adopted, but also for the real functioning of democracy.
"The EU does not only value us for the number and quality of laws we adopt. The agreement on this joint resolution is a very positive thing. A government can open negotiations, a majority can negotiate chapters, but an Albania enters the EU," he said.
Xhafaj said that justice reform and the EU are a kind of reciprocal guarantee for each other. He emphasized the role and mission of the Assembly in strengthening its constitutional role towards institutions.
"Without the success of the justice reform, there is no EU membership, but without the EU, the justice reform cannot be kept secure and sustainable. The justice reform remains the greatest test of European credibility. The role of the Assembly becomes more important than ever, the Assembly has a great mission: to strengthen parliamentary control, increase democratic control, guarantee the quality of reforms and keep public trust in the process alive. The stronger the Assembly is, the stronger the democratic institutions become," said Xhafaj.
