Rama returns to help Meloni? Italian media shed light on the behind-the-scenes of the meeting
The meeting held yesterday at Palazzo Chigi between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is seen by Italian media as an attempt to review and reactivate the migrant agreement between the two countries.
According to “ Il Giornale ”, the two leaders held a meeting that served as a “tagliando” for the Italy-Albania protocol, which indicates the need to evaluate and improve its implementation. The very fact of this review, according to the media interpretation, is related to the challenges that continue to be faced in managing migratory flows.
The article emphasizes that the centers in Gjadra and Shëngjin continue to be used as repatriation structures, but discussions at the government level suggest that their functioning remains part of a process that requires further adjustments and adaptation to the situation on the ground.
"Il Giornale" notes that the Italian government is preparing for an increase in migratory pressure in the coming months, due to the worsening crisis in the Middle East and the approach of the summer season, factors that traditionally increase departures to Europe.
In this context, the immigration file remains a key priority for the Meloni government in the last year of the legislature. Two weeks ago, a task force of ministers and responsible officials met at Palazzo Chigi, while new measures to manage the situation are being considered.
During a statement in Parliament, Meloni highlighted the direction followed by her government: " We have signed international agreements that did not exist before, we have reduced disembarkations, we have significantly increased repatriations, we have strengthened border controls, we have fought human traffickers and, above all, we have reduced deaths in the Mediterranean. Now we must consolidate this approach and make it sustainable and structural. This is also why, in the latest security bill, we have foreseen the possibility of activating, in cases of proven need, a temporary maritime blockade on our coasts ."
Among the measures being discussed are strengthening deportations, increasing border controls, and paying attention to the Balkan route, while the objective remains to present concrete results in the 2027 elections.
So in short, it seems that the Gjadri centers will be reactivated and Rama is coming to Meloni's aid for the elections next year. The agreement was signed precisely to help him before the elections and it seems that the same thing will happen now.
