Today, the main news in the Albanian and Greek media is the "swearing in" of Fredi Beleri as a MEP in Strasbourg.
In fact, Fredi Beleri will not take any oath as there is no oath procedure in the European Parliament.
They are considered MEPs when the institution that manages the elections in EU member states (in the case of Greece, the Ministry of the Interior) notifies the European Parliament (secretariat) of the list of winners.
So Beleri goes to Strasbourg like everyone else and begins to participate in the work of the Parliament.
But there is no oath procedure, unlike what the Greeks try to present. The only thing he will do is the declaration of assets and bank accounts.
This morning, Beleri left the premises of Fier prison, where he is serving a sentence of 2 years of imprisonment. The General Directorate of Prisons has approved a 5-day permit to allow his physical participation in the meeting of the European Parliament.
He was welcomed outside the prison premises by family members and the car of the Greek embassy. Beleri has not spoken to the local media, but he has briefly spoken to the Greek media that are waiting for him at the exit of the prison.
"I want to thank you for the support during all these months, I am excited, happy, we will talk about the rest in Athens. Thank you for everything," Beleri told Greek media.
Beleri travels together with other MEPs from Athens to Strasbourg, where they will take the oath on July 16. According to the approved permit, he has until 16:00 on July 20 to return to serve the remainder of his sentence in Albania.
The Directorate of Prisons has requested complete information from Beleri, including the travel guarantee, delivery of the return ticket and hotel accommodation. If he is going to stay longer than the permit allows because of developments there, he will have to officially inform all the relevant institutions, including the local authorities in Brussels.
Beleri has been sentenced by the Appeal of GJKKO to 2 years of imprisonment on the charge of electoral corruption after he was arrested by the police 2 days before the elections on May 14, 2023. In the first week of June, Beleri was elected as a member of the European Parliament with about 237 thousand votes, ranking fourth in the list of 7 winners who competed under the slogan of the ruling party in Greece, "New Democracy".
