While the EU has put the brakes on integration and many international reports are blackening Albania, Edi Rama claims to have eradicated corruption.
During his speech at the Assembly of the Socialist Party of Albania in Lezha, he reacted to the opposition's accusations of corruption, describing them as an attempt to tarnish the government's work.
Rama emphasized that Albania is at its lowest historical level of corruption.
" All those who are whispering behind our backs and creating a huge noise of 'corruption, corruption, corruption'... Now I'm not saying that we have eradicated corruption, but I can say that Albania has never fought corruption like now and that corruption is lower than ever before. How can there be an increase in corruption and salaries and pensions at the same time? This does not happen. Because salaries and pensions increase when revenues in the state budget increase. How can there be an increase in corruption and at the same time the number of beneficiaries from public competitions increase. These are all things that are not related to each other ," Rama said, among other things.
Rama also said that when the DP was in power, people would stand in line to pay for electricity or to get a certificate. The Prime Minister added that the SP today has a golden opportunity for the country's EU membership. If it does not happen, Rama said that history will never forgive them.
But contrary to what Rama says, Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2025 has rated Albania with 39 points, down from 42 points in 2024. Albania has thus lost 3 points, falling 11 places in Transparency International's global ranking. In last year's report, official Tirana was ranked 80th out of 180 countries, while today the country is ranked 91st. So corruption has worsened.
