Gramoz Ruçi, former Speaker of the Parliament and one of the close associates of the historical leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, appeared tearful at the farewell ceremony for the former Prime Minister.
Tributes in honor of the former Prime Minister began around 08:30 on Sunday, where thousands of citizens bid farewell to Fatos Nano.
Representatives of politics and public life honored one of the most important politicians of the Albanian transition.
During his speech to the media, Ruçi described Nano as his brother and the man who reformed the Socialist Party.
Ruçi also said that Nano is the first leader to be persecuted in a democracy, after serving 4 years in prison between 1993-1997.
"Today is the day to honor and commemorate Fatos Nano. Fatos Nano, as the first and founder of the Socialist Party. As the first and reformer and democratizer of the Socialist Party. Fatos Nano as the leader of the Socialist Party in 14 years, where it will no longer happen that in the span of 14 years you spend 4 years in isolation and 8 years keeping the political force in power, precisely in the first decade of the establishment and transformation of this political force, like no other sister political force in Eastern Europe.
He will be remembered as the first who, in the first and last elections he lost, gave an irrevocable resignation, leaving the political force and the new generation free to take the leadership of this political force. He will be remembered as the first who did not simply preach the thesis he said when he came to power that 'we will sacrifice power to build a state', but made it a reality.
"Fatos Nano will remain an excellent citizen, a first-class intellectual, a brilliant politician and will be remembered as the first politician to be persecuted for 4 years in a democracy. The memory of my brother and mayor Fatos Nano will never be forgotten," said Ruçi.
