From 08:30 at the Palace of Congresses in Tirana, tributes are being held in honor of the former Prime Minister and historic leader of the Socialists, Fatos Nano, who passed away at the age of 73.

Public figures, politicians and hundreds of citizens have bid farewell to Nano, while the ceremony has been divided into two parts: public and state, in which top officials and the diplomatic corps will pay homage.

Fatos Nano's former bodyguard, Viktor Agolli, participated in the tributes in honor of the former socialist prime minister.

According to Agolli, Nano found the country in ruins and led it on the right path. He also recounted his last meeting with Fatos Nano in Durres, adding that both the left and the right did not want him to become President.

"Fatos Nano will be remembered by ordinary people. For what he did and what he did to Albania. He took over in 1997 in ruins. The Presidency and the Prime Minister's Office did not even have chairs. It was Fatos Nano who accepted the resignation and never returned to politics. It was Fatos Nano who took people by the nails from the street and made them ministers. It was Fatos Nano who sang the Beatles, who knew 7 foreign languages, who had great friends in the international arena like Bill Clinton and Berlusconi.

I was proud and the whole group that we worked with this man. Fatos Nano will remain in the minds of Albanians as a man who knew how to build a state. I last met him in 2019 in Durrës. I kept in touch with third parties. He met me when I was the border chief and said to me 'how did you get here?' and I said to him 'I graduated from Fatos Nano's political school to get here'.

"Was there a hostage? Yes, the hostage was that he did not become president. Not only the DP, but also the SP did not want to make him President. This was our hostage, his maybe not. Fatos Nano, in order not to lead the government to another election, sacrificed himself and his own party, after 6 SP deputies voted for Bamir Topi for President of the Republic," said Agolli.
