In the podcast "Flasim", Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke about digital identity.
He stated that the identity card can now be kept on a mobile phone or computer and will function as a multifunctional digital wallet.
He also spoke about an innovation at the "Mother Teresa" airport, with a digital gate that will avoid passport control and only a look will be enough to verify identity.
"When the early concession of identity cards ended, we took on a major challenge: the creation of a state-owned company for the production of identity cards, better and cheaper than the previous ones. The Identitek company successfully faced this challenge and is now committed to the new challenge of digital identity, namely the transition of the identity card to a mobile phone or computer and its functioning as a multifunctional digital wallet.
The European Union is also moving in this direction and has set 2027 as the deadline for introducing digital identity into everyday life in Europe. Albanians will have their digital identity ready in early 2026.
Another beautiful innovation we are preparing is entering Albania from "Mother Teresa" airport without any stops and without passport control, but through a digital gateway, for which your appearance is enough to verify your identity, electronically linking it to your ticket and your data.
Thus, Tirana Airport, already well-known as one of the first airports in Europe with digital passport control, will be the first airport in Europe with a digital entry gate.
"This is thanks to the blessing of digital technology, which enables developing countries to make epochal breakthroughs that would otherwise be impossible," Rama said.
