US President Donald Trump said he still believes Canada should become the 51st state of the US, during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House.
"I believe it would be a massive tax cut for Canadian citizens. You get free military, great medical care, other things. It would have a lot of advantages ," Trump said.
Trump said he is a real estate developer and added that when he saw the two countries together "I said that's how it had to be."
"But we won't discuss this if someone doesn't want to discuss it," the president added.
Carney objected and told Trump: " As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale . "
"It's not for sale. It will never be for sale," the Canadian prime minister added.
Trump also said that Carney's insistence that Canada is not for sale will not affect the discussions the parties are having today.
He stressed that only time will tell and addressed Carney, saying: "never say never."
"We'll see over time what happens," Trump declared.
"We have an incredible auto sector between us. There is nothing that can force the US to remove tariffs. This is a larger discussion that will take time and more conversations," the Canadian prime minister added.
Meanwhile, Trump said the US will "always" defend Canada and added that "it's not about money."
