Kosovo and Albania are in the same situation with populist leaders who cannot deal with internal problems. Rama with extremely high corruption and organized crime, and Kurti with populist ideas that help Vučić prevent the formation of the issue of the Community of Municipalities with a Serbian majority.
The leaders of the six Western Balkan countries and senior EU and US officials met on Thursday, May 16, in Kotor at the summit on the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which took place under the slogan "One region and common vision".
The summit was opened by Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic and, in addition to the host, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, the Prime Ministers of Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia, Albin Kurti, Edi Rama and Talat Xhaferi, as well as the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia, Borjana Kristo, received attend the meeting.
The leaders signed a 16-point joint statement after the summit.
The statement, among other things, emphasizes the commitment to continue cooperation in the region, as well as to benefit from the renewed momentum in the EU's enlargement policy.
"One region - a common vision is at least an ideal"
Naim Leo Beshiri, director of the Institute for European Affairs, tells the Serbian media "Danas" that although the declaration is based on the previous ones with new agreements to keep the Berlin process alive, almost in all the documents in the region there is a comprehensive sentence , which follow the European path.
Beshiri says that Ballani has new obligations and hopes and we constantly remind the political elites of the five countries that they must work on the implementation of previous agreements.
"In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the fragmentation of the government at so many levels makes even the simplest decisions about fundamental rights and institutional powers impossible, which is also shown as an asterisk in the statement. Political turmoil and the return to power of the extremely corrupt VMRO-DPMNE in Macedonia calls into question the legacy of Zoran Zaev and the peace agreement with Greece. Kosovo and Albania are in the same situation with populist leaders who cannot deal with internal problems. Rama with extremely high corruption and organized crime, and Kurti with populist ideas that help Vučić prevent the formation of the issue of the Community of Municipalities with a Serbian majority. After all, Vučić has the characteristics of all the authorities in the region, except the one who wants to see his country in the EU. Moreover, the negative campaign against the EU and pro-Russia, and recently also pro-China, hinders an informed debate among the citizens of Serbia about the future of the country", emphasizes Beshiri.
As he adds, when we consider the internal and interstate problems in the region, the slogan "One region, common vision" is at least an ideal to strive for, even though we are light years away from it.
"I appreciate the enthusiasm of many people to build a bigger picture through small things. That through the rise of economic power, the European values on which the EU alliance is based can be achieved", says Beshiri.
"The regimes will continue to fix things for their companies"
However, he continues, these six Balkan countries and their regimes are linked by one thing - corruption. That worthlessness brought them together in Montenegro, as well as the promise of billions that the EU will easily give them and give to the citizens of the region, who will get some cream in return.
"The regimes will continue to fix jobs for their companies at much higher prices, embezzle wherever possible and continue to steal the future of children who are just being born," he says.
According to him, without a clear policy of sanctions against corrupt regimes, those who organize organized crime, who suppress freedom of the media, assembly and speech and who threaten democratic electoral processes, the EU will become complicit in the decline of the Balkan countries. Western.
"It is important that Brussels and other European cities understand that the thieves will say anything, even that they are united and have a common vision, as long as the money is in their account, while on the other hand they will spend populist money for national. stadiums, megalomaniacal construction projects and other losses that do not have the citizen in the center of attention", he emphasizes. / Taken with cuts from Danas
