The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, has spoken about the new justice system in the country.
He praised the role of the United States of America in building institutions, adding that their role is irreplaceable.
He also spoke about the process of selecting the new head of the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), after the current head Altin Dumani's mandate ends in December.
According to Begaj, the election of the new SPAK leader in a fair and transparent manner is the right action not because internationals demand it, but because this is a demand and a right that the Albanian people themselves want.
Excerpt from the Interview on "Real Story":
Sokol Balla: Mr. President, I have two questions related to the new justice system, which continues to be called a success for Albania. SPAK seems to have found American support that we all thought it had lost, but the focus seems to be a little different. So the American alarm is, we are with you, fight organized crime, fight trafficking, and hit crime regardless of who it is connected to. So, there is support, but it seems that there is also criticism, right?
President Bajram Begaj: I think that the US will never take its due attention away from the Western Balkans and to come to your question, of course the US presence in building new justice institutions has an irreplaceable role in Albanian society and I believe that with the last declaration, I say that it is part of the mission of SPAK and GJKKO to make it possible for that reform launched in 2016, today in 2025 to have a functional justice system, a justice system that implements standard legal procedures according to EU standards, and there must be transparency and accountability from these institutions which fortunately are institutions that are self-managed by the people themselves or professionals in this field.
Sokol Balla: However, Mr. President, there is a growing concern from both the US and the EU that are demanding more transparency, especially when SPAK elects its new head. What more can the President of the Republic do to guarantee this process that is expected to start on the 18th and end sometime on the 20th of December?
President Bajram Begaj: I just said that the justice reform made it possible for the justice system to be organized on the basis of several institutions that are self-regulating and do not seek and have no possible window to be influenced by politics, much less by the President of the Republic. Electing the new head of SPAK in a fair and transparent manner is the right way, not because internationals demand it, but because Albanians demand it.
Sokol Balla: We are here, for every person this glass palace is the government of the world, despite the criticism. Of course, the speech of a head of state is a culminating moment in a career, how did you experience this and are these those moments that despite the pressures, the 'under the belly' attacks from those you face, you say OK this is the moment where I do not regret accepting to become President of the Republic.
President Bajram Begaj: We are truly in a place where this building makes it possible for political dialogue to prevail over division, for cooperation to prevail over conflict, and I think that after yesterday's meeting between President Trump and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, there was also a kind of appreciation for this Organization that, rightly as President Trump said, has not stopped any war, but works hard to cooperate in addressing the various challenges facing the entire globe. I think that for an individual to come and deliver such a speech in such a prestigious hall is an honor and a privilege. But to deliver it in the national language, I say, is a matter of pride.
