The Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament held a discussion on the draft report on Albania's progress in the European integration process.
During his speech, the President of the Commission, David McAllister, focused on recent developments in the country, the progress of reforms and the role of political forces on the path towards the European Union.
He emphasized that Albania has opened all negotiation chapters and is awaiting the next report, while underlining that the membership process is assessed individually for each country.
"Albania has opened all chapters and is awaiting the report. Albania must continue to work to move forward in the advancement process. Each country moves individually in this process. We must see a big change for citizens," said McAllister.
He assessed that all political forces in Albania have shown interest in European integration, emphasizing the importance of political dialogue.
David McAllister also had a message for Berisha as he emphasized that the DP's violent protests are not acceptable in a democratic society.
"We encourage political dialogue; it is important that the majority also creates space for the opposition and that the opposition becomes more cooperative in the interest of the people and democracy. We have seen progress in Albania. Violent protests are not acceptable in a democratic society," he declared, also referring to recent visits by European representatives to the country.
The discussion in the Foreign Affairs Committee precedes the approval of the final report, which will reflect the European Parliament's assessment of Albania's progress in the integration process.
