The rapporteur for Albania in the European Parliament, Andreas Schieder, has expressed concern about the political situation and the functioning of democratic standards in the country.
In the published draft report and draft resolution, he notes that the political climate continues to remain polarized and that there are signals of pressure on voters, elements that require immediate institutional response.
The EP report highlights that, although the legal framework for elections is generally considered adequate, political tension and harsh rhetoric are negatively affecting parliamentary oversight and citizens' trust in democratic institutions. According to the report, ongoing political clashes create an environment that undermines institutional stability.
"There is pressure on voters, there is polarization. In recent weeks, he has been radicalized by trying to hold street protests. As for corruption, reform is underway. Albania has made progress, but there is still work to be done. High-level investigations and convictions are required, as the issue of corruption remains problematic," he said.
Schieder underlines that the reform process has brought progress, but emphasizes that the fight against corruption requires concrete results, especially at the highest levels of administration and politics.
