The Greek newspaper Protothema.gr in an article today took aim at Prime Minister Edi Rama, attempting to link him to old historical narratives and biased interpretations of family origins.
Under the guise of a "historical analysis", the article attempts to question Rama's identity, background and political positions, reviving well-known theses of Greek nationalist propaganda, at a moment when Rama ignited sparks against Greeks with jokes exchanged at the Abu Dhabi conference with Greek moderator John Defterios, which were interpreted as insults to Greece.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the origins of Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, who seems to be facing problems in his country, as shown by the recent massive demonstrations.
Of course, on the internet, everyone is free to write whatever they want. The same applies to the origin of Edi Rama. Since the issue concerned us, we were reminded of a Facebook post by Dr. Stavros Dayou that was made a few months ago (May 2025).
We contacted Mr. Dagios, an excellent expert on Greek-Albanian affairs and with a rich career as a writer, and asked him to reprint this particular post. Mr. Dagios willingly and very kindly gave us permission to do so, and we thank him warmly. Let's see what Mr. Dagios will write.
"The mother of the current Prime Minister of Albania (a doctor by profession) was a descendant of a well-known family from the Himara Highlands, bearing the surname Koleka. Her uncle was the long-standing Albanian politician, Spiro Thomas Koleksa (1908-2001), a graduate of Italian universities, who rose to the highest levels of the Albanian party and government hierarchy (holder of the title of Politburo and minister of various portfolios).
The same family also includes Spiro Koleka (1880-1940), who was vice-president of the first Senate of Albania (1920), and member of parliament with various portfolios (1921-1924). After Zog's return to Albania (December 1924), with whom Koleka disagreed with his persecutory policy against the Christian element, he went into exile in Austria (where he had studied as an engineer), Croatia, Italy and, most recently, for a long time, in Corfu.
He returned to Albania after Zog's departure with his health deeply shaken and died in 1940 near his family.
In 1921, as a member of the Vlora parliament, Koleka demanded the preservation of the privileges of the Himariotes, who "through an amazing sophism the Albanian government witnessed their removal or enslavement of Himara".
Në vitin 1933, Koleka banoi në Korfuz dhe foli "me gjuhë jashtëzakonisht të ashpër dhe me karakterizime shumë serioze për politikën e skllavërimit të vendit të tij", por ai ruajti sigurinë se "elementi i shëndetshëm mysliman nuk e miraton politikën e mbetjeve të regjimit hamitik, domethënë luftën kundër elementëve të krishterë". Gazetat greke të kohës e karakterizuan "mërgimtarin më të ditur grek Kolekën" si një shpirt me ide demokratike dhe liberale, një luftëtar për mbizotërimin e ideve popullore në favor të të gjitha popullatave.
Babai i tij, Christakis Rama (1932-1998), një atlet dhe skulptor i shquar i rrymës hibride të "realizmit socialist", ishte anëtar i parlamentit dhe anëtar i Presidiumit të Parlamentit (1970-1991).
Megjithatë, vetë Rama u distancua nga origjina si e nënës ashtu edhe e babait të tij, duke kaluar nëpër një evolucion politik spontan dhe duke deklaruar se origjina e tij përfundimtare demonstrohet nga Mirdita katolike romake dhe nga dikush që zbriti prej andej në fshatin Vouno i quajtur Kol Leka.
Këto përmenden në postimin e S. Dayou, le të shohim disa informacione shtesë rreth asaj që përmendet në të.
Vunoi është një fshat në Shqipëri në Bashkinë e Himarës, prefektura e Vlorës. Ndodhet në një lartësi prej 321 metrash dhe në vitin 2005 kishte 486 banorë. Sipas regjistrimit të kryer nga "KOMISIONI NDËRKOMBËTAR I KONTROLLIT ETNOLOGJIK" në vitin 1914, fshati njihet me emrin Vuno. Kishte 950 banorë, të gjithë grekë, katër shkolla greke dhe sigurisht, asnjë shqip.
I përkiste Kazasë së Himarës, e cila iu cedua për shkak të presionit italian dhe austriak në Shqipëri, ashtu si i gjithë Epiri i Veriut.
Babai i Ramës, Kristaq Rama (1932-1998), lindi në Durrës dhe kishte lidhje të ngushta me regjimin e Hoxhës. Si skulptor vetë, i cili studioi gjithashtu në BRSS në vitet 1950, ai shërbeu kryesisht si inspektor i arteve të bukura dhe pedagog i jashtëm në Institutin e Lartë të Arteve. Në vitin 1988, ai dyshohet se ka nënshkruar, së bashku me pasardhësin e Hoxhës, Ramiz Alia dhe të tjerë, dënimin me vdekje me varje të poetit Havzi Nela (1934-1988), ndërsa ka edhe raportime se ai nënshkroi edhe dënimin me vdekje të 29-vjeçarit Enver Osmani nga Dibra.
Nëna e Ramës, Aneta Rama-Koleka (ky ishte mbiemri i vajzërisë së saj) lindi në Vuno në vitin 1938 dhe ndërroi jetë më 1 gusht 2020. Ajo ishte dentiste, një nga dentistet e para femra në Shqipëri. Aneta Rama-Koleka studioi në Poloni. Nga martesa e saj me Kristaq Ramën, ajo pati dy djem: Edin (lindur më 1964) dhe Olsin (lindur më 1969).
Xhaxhai i Ramës, Spiro Thoma Koleka (1908-2001), gjithashtu i lindur në Vuno , siç shkruan zoti Dayos, arriti pozicione të larta gjatë viteve të Enver Hoxhës (si zëvendëskryeministër). Ndoshta kjo marrëdhënie e ngushtë midis babait dhe xhaxhait të Edi Ramës me regjimin e Hoxhës shpjegon pjesërisht politikën e tij antigreke.
Finally, Rama's predecessor, Spiro Jorgo Koleka (1879/1880-1940), served as Minister of Public Works of Albania in the 1920s and, Greek newspapers of the time, characterize him as friendly to the Greeks of Himara and the Christians of the region.
King Zog, to whom Mr. Dayos' post refers, is known in Greek as Zogou. We found nothing online about Eddie Rama's studies at Harvard, on a Greek scholarship, while Mr. Dayos knew nothing about this topic. However, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the surname Rama has a common root with the surname Rammos, common in Epirus, especially in Pogoni, the prefecture of Ioannina.
