Mereme Sela, who was not allowed to run against Sali Berisha for the position of leader of the Democratic Party of Albania (DP) on the grounds that she did not meet the criteria, is not stopping. The doctor from Durrës, whose candidacy on social networks produced more memes than news, has decided to officially open trouble with Sali Berisha, by going to the Tirana Court.
Sela has sued the Democratic Party in the Tirana Judicial District Court, attacking the decision to disqualify him from the race for the leadership of the DP, as an unreasonable, unmotivated decision and lacking procedural transparency.
Sela claims that she was excluded from the race “in direct violation of her statutory rights and the principle of equality in competition.” The doctor from Durrës also claims that the Commission allowed Sali Berisha to run, in flagrant violation of the prohibition provided for in the statute, as the “Basha” article sanctions that the leader who loses the elections must step down from the party leadership.
Sela is asking the Court to suspend the May 23 election process, where the membership, through the 1 member, 1 vote principle, was called to vote for the President of the DP.
Despite the fact that a day earlier, Sali Berisha described Sela as the only candidate who was not controlled by Edi Rama, but did not meet the criteria, it seems that this assessment has not softened the doctor at all, who received only 43 votes in the Durrës primaries.
Mereme Sela's 5 requests to the Court
1. Declaring the decision to disqualify the plaintiff from the race for President of the DPA absolutely invalid;
2. Obligation of the defendant to reinstate the plaintiff in the competition;
3. Declaring Sali Berisha's candidacy absolutely invalid;
4. Finding of a serious violation of the statute and principles of internal democracy;
5. Establishment of a precautionary measure for the lawsuit: immediate suspension of the election process of 23.05.2026 until the conclusion of the trial.
