Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha publicly defended the Albanian diplomatic service, describing it as professional and dedicated.
In a press conference on Friday, Hoxha stated that Albanian diplomats work in conditions that often do not match the public perception of the comfort of serving abroad.
"Our diplomats serve in challenging environments and circumstances. It used to seem very charming to leave the country to go to a Western country, but not everyone serves in Western countries. Not everyone serves in the most comfortable conditions possible. Sometimes partners cannot find jobs, children do not get an education easily. And after 3-4 years they have to move. I have experienced it myself, but we have not talked about these things before, because they would seem like luxury concerns compared to the situation in Albania. Today they are no longer luxury concerns," said Hoxha.
He directly links this reality to the difficulty of filling positions in the foreign service, even in destinations traditionally considered desirable.
"Today it is not easy for colleagues to immediately decide to go to Stockholm or Madrid. They will think carefully and will also balance important aspects of their private lives, and for this we need to think about how to have better incentives," he added.
