Lack of medicines and tests, debates in the Assembly on Health; Oncology
Evis Sala

In an interpellation session in the Parliament, the Minister of Health, Evis Sala, faced criticism from three opposition MPs regarding the situation in the health system, especially regarding laboratory services and the treatment of oncological patients. But the minister, who must provide emergency solutions for this category of patients, as any delay risks their lives, has chosen to talk about future plans.

Democratic MP Bardh Spahia raised concerns about the interruption of laboratory tests after the 20th of each month in public hospitals, linking this to the lack of funds in the concession of laboratories. According to him, this situation has been repeated for years and affects 19 public hospitals, including the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center.

Spahia stressed that the restrictions imposed by the concessionaire also jeopardize the performance of emergency tests, while patients are forced to pay out of pocket to receive services. He added that over 60% of the 13 billion lek fund has been spent, while the service, according to him, remains inadequate.

On the other hand, MP Kliti Hoti raised concerns about the lack of medicines in Oncology and the difficulties patients face in treatment. He brought concrete examples of patients who, according to him, have been forced to seek treatment abroad or face delays due to the lack of medicines.

Minister Evis Sala dismissed accusations of a shortage of medicines, stating that currently there is no shortage of any medicine in the QSUT. She announced that the budget for medicines in 2026 is 19.5 billion lek, with an increase of 1.5 billion lek dedicated to oncology.

According to the minister, the list of oncology drugs has been expanded and the capacity of daily chemotherapy has been doubled. She also emphasized that there has been no increase in drug prices.

In response to criticism, Sala announced plans to establish a National Tumor Institute and create a national oncology network. According to her, this model aims to place the patient at the center of the system, improving coordination between institutions and the quality of treatment.

The institute is expected to function as a reference center for oncology, conduct scientific research, and collaborate with academic institutions at home and abroad. It will also coordinate oncology services at the national level.
