Reaction of women deputies of the Socialist Party, members of the Alliance of women deputies of the Assembly of Albania

The event that happened today in the Presidency of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania, from the recorded footage that clearly shows when the deputy Xhelal Mziu forcefully pushes our colleague Milva Ekonomi, is an ugly and reprehensible event.

This act of violence is an attack not only on a female colleague, but also on the principles that should guide our work. When this unacceptable act takes place in the premises of the Assembly against a female MP, it is even more serious as it damages the dignity and rights of all women and girls who exercise public functions and those who contribute to political life, and above all it violates moral standards and ethics of elected representatives.

This act of violence simultaneously harms the institution of the Assembly, as an institution where the spirit of tolerance, respect, and ethics must be shown in all forms towards everyone, especially towards women MPs. The Assembly is the place where the citizens and the whole society expect to see from us the first model of respect, tolerance, civil communication and that we fight not with the strength of muscles but with the strength of argument.

As deputies of this Assembly, we have the obligation to respect the laws and standards that we have jointly adopted, provided for in the resolutions of the Assembly, as well as all international obligations made part of our legislation, including the Istanbul Convention, the Resolutions of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, for our responsibility in the fight against violence against women, hate speech and intolerance.

We, the women deputies of the Socialist Party, members of the Alliance of women deputies of the Parliament of Albania, condemn this serious act of violence, as today's act of violence against a woman in politics is not only an attack on a colleague, but an attack on to all women who contribute and fight for a fairer society that respects women and their rights.
