The Socialist Party will convene its National Assembly on the morning of March 21. The meeting, which is considered important in terms of the process of reorganizing the SP structures, will be held in Durrës. The meeting is expected to start at 10:00, as announced, and will open with a speech by Prime Minister Edi Rama. The latter is expected to focus not only on the political developments of the day, but also to define the objectives that the Socialists should have for the next elections.
The Prime Minister's speech is expected to have as its main pillars messages towards the opposition, which he occasionally criticizes and mocks, but also regarding the justice system. There have been many cases when the Prime Minister has strongly attacked the justice system, while also giving warnings about the steps that the majority in the Assembly may take with legal changes.
However, there have been reactions from internationals, especially those from the chancellery that have provided and continue to provide support for SPAK, including technical or financial support, to the Prime Minister's warnings. Therefore, the meeting of the SP Assembly, beyond its organizational character, is awaited with interest in terms of the messages, coded or not, that the Prime Minister will give, both in relation to justice and politics in general.
This Assembly meeting follows a decision by the Presidency of the Socialist Party, and is considered the official start of the election process for new party leaders in each branch. The process aims to renew every cell of the party, including local forums and grassroots organizations. The elections for local leaders are expected to be closed by June 12, 2026, a date that coincides with the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Party.
The SP Presidency has now formalized the criteria for those who will aim to lead the SP branches. Referring to the criteria, candidates must have moral integrity and not be involved in legal or ethical issues that damage the party's image. Priority will be given to people who have shown skills in managing past campaigns and who have strong connections with the base.
A few days ago, the General Secretary of the Socialist Party, Blendi Klosi, stated that the goal is to reorganize and strengthen party structures, including their expansion into the diaspora. In this context, specific decisions will be made on the method of organization in countries with a large concentration of Albanian emigrants.
Another point that is expected to be discussed is the program and strategy for the upcoming electoral challenge. Local elections will be held in the spring of 2027, where voters will elect new mayors, but also municipal councils. Prime Minister Edi Rama has asked members of the Presidency and deputies to intensify meetings in the territory, not to sever ties with citizens, a message that is expected to be conveyed to members of the National Assembly tomorrow.
The next item expected to be discussed by the Assembly is the reassessment of membership. The process launched in March will be followed by a reassessment of membership that is expected to be concluded around June. Prime Minister Edi Rama has called for maximum focus on the organizational process, drawing attention to the internal debates that may arise during this phase. Rama has demanded from the structures to have a "real register of supporters" and the need to balance gender representation in the co-management of organizations. The Socialists aim to expand their base through a campaign called "You Choose".
In this regard, the aim will be to attract students and young professionals who have not been part of active politics before. It is also intended, for the first time, to apply a specific procedure for Albanians abroad, allowing them to contribute to the party's program without having to be physically in Albania. /Pamphlet/
