DP MP Jorida Tabaku commented on the proposed changes to the Criminal Code regarding the decriminalization of defamation of journalists.
She said that the European Commission excludes cases of arrest of journalists. According to her, nothing useful is achieved from the proposal that the government brought to the Parliament today, since according to her, nothing will be reflected in the implementation.
"We proposed a draft of the criminal code that would repeal the article on insult and defamation, not only for journalists but also for citizens. A measure to show that free speech is not threatened with prison, of course there are measures in the civil code. The Albanian government decided that the article would not affect insult, while defamation would affect and define the group of individuals who would be outside the threat of prison, by selecting those journalists who would be threatened with prison and those others who would be allowed to defame and insult. Today we must make the decision to join European standards or use the media as a form of pressure", said Tabaku, among other things.
