Amid a frozen deal for a resort on Sazan Island, Edi Rama was caught “stolen” in Paris shaking hands with Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump. The head of government was there for the Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine Summit, but what has attracted more attention is not the diplomatic activity, but the “stolen” moment with Kushner.
Rama has shared on social media several photos of himself meeting with Jared Kushner, the man behind major strategic investments for Albania. The photo has been interpreted by many observers as a signal that the prime minister is trying at all costs to maintain friendly relations with the US, especially with elements closely linked to the Trump family.
This photo comes at a time when the Sazan Island deal with Kushner’s Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC is essentially on hold. On December 15, 2025, the company officially announced that it was postponing the deal for another year, effectively blocking the investment. This came after a series of clear signals that the firm had no intention of realizing its plans for the large luxury resort, refusing to submit the documentation requested by the Strategic Investment Committee and Albanian institutions.
Meanwhile, relations between Rama and Washington have entered a phase of tension. The refusals of senior American officials to meet at international summits, the lack of high-level contacts with the White House, and the refusal to congratulate the victory in the May 11, 2025 elections have signaled a noticeable cooling. In this context, the photo with Kushner in Paris seems more than a coincidence; it is seen as Rama's attempt to kill two birds with one stone: to save relations with the US and to revive hopes for Sazani.
In fact, according to the decision of the Strategic Investment Committee dated December 30, 2024, Rama had set strict deadlines for the start of negotiations and the submission of project documents by the investor. These deadlines have not been respected. The company has stayed away from contacts, without publicly explaining the reasons for the delays, while other Kushner projects, including the one in Belgrade, have been definitively withdrawn. /Pamphlet
