The European Commission has officially reacted to the media after the adoption of the gender equality law yesterday with only majority votes.

The EC stresses that this law is an integral part of EU law and is a condition for all candidate countries. Taking cue from Berisha's statement to EU Ambassador Gonzato, the EC said that this law is not anyone's personal or political agenda, but an essential step towards EU membership.

The EC further said that it supports the adoption by the Albanian Parliament of the law on "Gender Equality", adding that this act was a sign of Albania's commitment to implementing key reforms.

“Approximation to the EU acquis is part of the accession process, which all candidate countries must ensure. This is not about personal or political agendas, but is an essential step towards EU membership. As Commissioner Kos stressed in her social media post yesterday, “Gender equality and non-discrimination are an integral part of EU law”. These are core EU values and fundamental rights.

"We welcome the adoption of the Gender Equality Law by the Albanian Parliament last night. This follows the recommendation in the Commission's Annual Report for Albania for 2025, which called on Albania to ensure a high level of ambition and is in line with the EU acquis and European standards for this law. This is another sign of Albania's commitment to implementing key reforms in the context of EU membership ," the EU said in a statement.

We recall that yesterday the law on "Gender Equality" was approved with 77 votes in favor and 36 against. The votes in favor were all from the majority, with the opposition persistently opposing this law, which, according to them, violates and desecrates the values of the Albanian family.

The parliamentary debate before the approval of the 'Gender Equality' law was extremely heated, with debates, accusations and insults. Among the most heated was that of the leader of the Democratic Party of Albania, Sali Berisha, outside the Parliament, where he accused the EU ambassador of trying to impose standards of multiple gender affiliation on Albanian society.

"I say this to the EU Ambassador, sir, we absolutely respect everyone's sexual orientation, but your efforts to impose standards of multiple gender affiliation, of gender in wide diversity, in addition to the binary one, on Albanian society, and I say here, even in your status you are binary.

"We don't deal with the treatment, he has children, he had a wife, he made his own decisions afterwards, as he explained, because I don't want to deal with his personal life at all ," Berisha said yesterday outside the Assembly hall.

This statement prompted an immediate reaction from Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, who, through a post on social media, said this is not anyone's personal agenda, but core EU values and fundamental rights.

"Gender equality and non-discrimination are an integral part of EU law. These are core EU values and fundamental rights. We welcome the adoption of the Gender Equality Law by the Albanian Parliament last night," wrote Marta Kos last night.

Immediately after Marta Kos's reaction, the Head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, asked the opposition to distance itself from the attack on the European Union ambassador, describing it as "shameful" and harmful to the Democratic Party itself.

" Once again, in parentheses, I wish and hope that by the end of this session someone from the Democratic Party will find the strength and power to distance themselves from that shameful attack today against the EU ambassador ," said Balla.

After this, Balla requested that disciplinary measures be taken against Berisha, requesting his expulsion from the Assembly for 2 months./ Pamphlet
