Four opposition parties have come together to launch a campaign calling for a new electoral system. In a press conference, the head of the Thurje Initiative, Endri Shabani, said that starting from the next few days, there will be initiatives to collect 50,000 citizens' signatures to then request a referendum to change the system.
He said that there should be a minimization of the regional division where there are no more than 4 regions. According to him, it was this division that enabled the SP to win 7 more mandates in the 2021 parliamentary elections.
Present at this conference, the head of LZHK, Dashamir Shehi, said that with this change, the aim is to put an end to the dominance of SP and PD on the political scene. According to him, both parties gained a larger number of deputies in the parliamentary elections only as a result of the regional division they have made with the territorial reform.
"We took this initiative to change something that really has value for Albania. It is not the case that the change is simply brought about by a law. But if there is no change with this law that we say today, the road has become mountainous. Let's be honest because it has become impossible to choose the representatives of the citizens. Indeed, this time the SP won 7 more MPs than they had, but the official DP group also gained those 3 MPs. That's why they don't make noise, they don't let anyone else sit at the table. Today we have invited them all, they did not come, but we came in the rest who are interested in this part to break a kind of monopoly they have in politics.
If we have a battle flag from here until the election comes, that's more important.
If we go to the referendum and lose, then it seems that the Albanian people are not very interested in me. But we have to go there. The most important thing is to collect those 50,000 votes there and tell them that the Albanian citizens have come to the tip of their noses with them" - said Shehi.
