DP seeks new electoral system, Bylykbashi: Parliament with 100 deputies

The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party is against Prime Minister Edi Rama's idea of reducing the number of deputies in the Albanian parliament from the current 140 to 100 deputies.

In an interview with "Vizion Plus", Bylykbashi, who is also the co-chair of the Electoral Reform Commission, points out that the idea of reducing the number of MPs is not a new idea, but such a drastic reduction in the number of MPs would kill pluralism.

" The first conclusion that comes from the reduction in the number of MPs is that small parties will disappear, or almost disappear. One might say why do we need small parties? The consequence is that pluralism within parliament will disappear and the possibility that the government will be in the hands of only one party leader is very high and consequently autocratization is also very possible. I believe that Albania still needs parliamentary pluralism, that those who form the government need a coalition so that the coalition can keep it on track ," said Bylykbashi.

Now that the Electoral Reform Commission has begun work, Bylykbashi explains that the Democratic Party will insist on a new electoral system.

" It's not that important for an electoral system, just who will be elected, so A is elected and B is not elected, through an open, closed or majoritarian list. It's how elections work and who are those who receive the legitimate mandate to form the government, then of course there are the other elements. But this system as it is, it must go away immediately ," Bylykbashi stressed.

DP Vice President Oerd Bylykbashi has reiterated the need for a new electoral system since 2020, when the June 5 agreement was violated by the SP by unilaterally changing the system.

" The fact that this system must go makes it a priority issue, as far as it requires us. And in any case, we will continue to insist on the return of coalitions as they were ," he said.

Beyond the need for a new electoral system, the recommendations of the OSCE ODIHR are important for the Democratic Party, especially regarding the misuse of state resources.

" The state has invaded the elections, the Socialist Party has turned into a state party, and we must find mechanisms to stop this, to dismantle it and make it ineffective and to impose penalties, including criminal penalties ," said Bylykbashi.

But according to the Democratic co-chair of the Electoral Reform Commission, Oerd Bylykbashi, Albania can only implement a consensual electoral reform if there is political will from the socialist majority to respect the agreements and not use the power of cards in parliament to unilaterally change the legal framework for elections.

Z.Bylykbashi!
