The Commission for Administrative-Territorial Reform has held hearings in the country's regions, while political parties are preparing their proposals for the new territorial division.
The co-chair of the commission, Luciano Boçi, stated that one of the variants that the opposition is considering envisages increasing the number of municipalities to around 100 units.
According to him, the proposal is based on the criteria of distance from the administrative center and the number of inhabitants. Boçi said that the proposed standard is that the units should not be more than 20 to 25 kilometers away from the center, while the minimum number of inhabitants should be 6 thousand, in accordance with European standards.
He stated that during the hearings, citizens have requested more representation and closer access to services to communities, while local representatives have raised concerns about the lack of competencies and financial resources.
Boçi also emphasized the need to strengthen the role of regions and the second level of local government. According to him, regions should have clearer competencies, representation structures and functions that small rural municipalities are unable to cover.
Another variant proposed by the opposition is related to organizing the country into regions, maintaining a higher number of municipalities and a structure with 8 districts.
"The hearings went well in my opinion, we got what we expected, a reaction to the demand and desire of citizens to increase the number of municipalities, to bring services closer, to have representation, but also requests from current representatives of local government, who want defined functions and means to carry out the functions. It is important that the demands prevail precisely those demands that are in line with the political stance of the DP, in relation to the territorial reform. "The other option is related to our proposal for the regions, by increasing the number of municipalities again, to an optimal number, to have 8 regions ," he emphasized.
