"They told me you would become like Putin", Rama starts the campaign:

Prime Minister Edi Rama said he has been accused by political opponents of aiming to concentrate power, and according to him, he has even been compared to Russian President Vladimir Putin, due to his demand for a strong governing mandate.

During his speech at the Socialist Party assembly in Elbasan, Rama also stated that the strong parliamentary majority of the Socialists has been crucial for advancing the negotiation process with the European Union.

"When I said we need a strong mandate, they said this will be done like Putin. But here we are today, at the end of January we passed 27 laws that were a package just for negotiations. Of these 27 laws, they were passed with 84 votes," Rama declared.

The Prime Minister continued by saying that if the Socialist Party did not have its current majority of 83 seats and the opposition had more influence in parliament, negotiations with the European Union would risk being blocked.

"Imagine if we had 75 and the others had Molotov cocktails, where would we be today? Then our negotiations would have been blocked, because the parliament would have been blocked not with muscles, but with a smile, saying: 'Yes, we give them the votes, we want to go to Europe together, but the drug regime must go, the SP must not have the government'" , he said.

According to Rama, the parliamentary majority was necessary to avoid political bargaining and obstacles in the European integration process.

He even emphasizes that "we must kiss the hands of those who gave us those votes for the strength those votes have in parliament and for carrying out the negotiations."

"We would be in a situation, we would be going around, like that expression that says, wagging our tail. That's why we needed those votes, that's why I insisted, that's why we should kiss the hands of those who gave us those votes, not for these seats, but for the strength that those votes have in parliament for us to carry out the negotiations," said Rama.

The Prime Minister also stated that the majority's objective remains the conclusion of negotiations with the European Union and the realization of a historic moment for the country.

"We must make history by finally closing the 500-year-old chapter and closing the negotiations," Rama concluded.
