The unnecessary fight in Shkodër for Ottoman atavisms

The unnecessary fight in Shkodër for Ottoman atavisms
Shkodra /

It makes no sense to play with a cradle of Illyrian and European civilization...

There is a quite unsightly phenomenon that has been noticed for a long time in the surroundings of Shkodra. The proclamation by public voices (media, representatives of the clergy or even activists) of the old Ottoman atavisms has sparked a "debate", or a completely unnatural fight.

If this were a phenomenon that comes from the area or individuals who are no longer important or are marginal, this would not be much of a problem. Because there will always be fundamentals of fanaticism and extremism.

But what is being noticed is that even some local media are turning into loads of a toxic debate that for Shkodra is not only foreign, but also very harmful.

And if you follow it carefully, it does not seem like a spontaneous gesture or phenomenon, but like a well-thought-out strategy, to provoke the most coveted place of religious tolerance, into a field of collisions without any connection.

It's been a while, when in the most incomprehensible way, the success of Vllaznia was surpassed in the media as an Ottoman metaphor. Taking as a trigger the surnames of the two leaders of Vllaznia: the October coach Qatip Osmani and the Korça director of the club Tefik Osmani. If it was just a momentary "hilarious" joke, it wouldn't cause so much hilarity.

But repeating it as a joke even by people with official authority in the club creates an unpleasant atmosphere.

Some local media, known for their legitimate religious stance, began to strongly teach this so-called Ottoman metaphor in their networks. And normally this has brought an unhealthy reaction in the comments. As many citizens who were shocked by the Ottomanization of the heart team reacted strongly, even with harsh words. This would be a test, to convince the authors of these jokes without salt, to stop this dangerous "game" in Shkodër, in a city that has certain beliefs, certain attitudes, certain worldviews. Where everyone has their own feelings, thoughts, and prejudices.

But no, it wasn't said; important people are also involved in this provocation, which resembles a dangerous massacre game, even though they do not have the respect or appreciation of the public.

Today, the same media that provoked with the Ottoman metaphor, brought through a completely inadequate logic an article by the mufti of Shkodra, Muhamet Sytari, who had paid homage to the Turkish commander of Shkodra during the Montenegrin siege, Hasan Riza Pasha.

This article brought back on social networks, as a tribute to the Turkish martyrs, has once again given rise to a great misunderstanding, and there have been many contradictory comments. In the comments, where ex-MP Selami Jenisheri also intervened, who verbally attacked a Shkodran citizen, who has been in emigration, in the USA for years.

Jenisheri called Enver Permeza, a well-known name in the city, "ungrateful". And this naturally provoked a chain reaction of insults and attacks among Shkodran residents.

So what is all this? That it is not spontaneous, that is understood, but where do these people want to come out who poison the environment of a city, which in centuries has never had any problems between citizens of different faiths. Many have struggled time and time again, but in Shkodër there has never been a gap between citizens of different religions. Who in most cases are neighbors and friends for generations.

Today, more than ever, it is up to people in authority to nurture even more this centuries-old coexistence. And this is also shown by the case of clerics like Mr. Sytari, who is a member of a family with parents, one Catholic and the other Muslim, and who has not had any problems. If individuals who have contributed to Shkodra should be rightly honored, even like Hasan Riza Pasha, they should be honored sincerely without a double context. Honoring the sacrifices that Shkodra has really given over the years to the people who have honored it is enough to avoid politics and controversy.

But there is one thing in between. Shkodra should not be confused with Ottoman atavisms, because this eternal Albanian city has suffered more than any other settlement from the terrible massacres of the Ottoman Empire.

Which have become eternal with the countless chronicles of both Ottoman and Western chroniclers, and above all by the master of masters Marin Barleti with the "Siege of Shkodra".

Rightly, anyone who does not find himself in the Ottoman atavisms feels touched on the most neuralgic nerve of the soul of this millennial city.

Shkodra was there long before Osmani and his son joined the Mongols to conquer the Balkans.

Shkodra is the icon of Albanian civilization, when the Ottomans were nomads in Asia Minor.

Therefore, it makes no sense to play with a cradle of Illyrian and European civilization.

Shkodra is the heart of Albania and not at all a Turkish atavism. Who thinks this, as Luigj Gurakuqi said, to go to Anatolia, but there is no place in the eternal city!/ Pamphlet
