During his speech at the protest, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, described February 20 as one of the most significant dates in the country's political history, recalling the toppling of the statue of Enver Hoxha in 1991.
He said that 35 years ago, thousands of citizens gathered in Student City marched towards Skanderbeg Square, in an action that, according to him, marked the peak of civic opposition to the communist regime and the end of a 46-year period of dictatorship.
Berisha stated that the participants of that movement could not have predicted that, after three and a half decades, the powers in the country, according to him, would once again be concentrated in the hands of a single person. He accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of this concentration of powers.
The protest took place in Tirana as part of the opposition's call for national mobilization.
Berisha : February 20 is the day on which, 35 years ago, tens of thousands of citizens gathered in Studenti City, in support of the student liberators' strike to free the country from the cult of Satan, at the call of Rajmonda Bulku and numerous protesters, set off towards Skanderbeg Square surrounded on all four sides by armored cars, machine guns, snipers, in a battle that marks the peak of the courage of Albanian citizens. In a peaceful battle that will always be remembered in the history of the democratic revolution that overthrew the statue, the cult of Satan, Enver Hoxha, the Albanian Hitler of the post-war period, the regime that in 46 years nationalized, persecuted, imprisoned, executed, and made more Albanians miserable than any occupier they had known in all of history. Eternal honor to the brave men who, like lions, rushed upon the statue of the dictator and liberated Albania from the 46-year dictatorship. 35 years ago, all those who were in the square would never have thought that 35 years later, they would find themselves in front of a regime that was certainly not the same, but unfortunately very similar in many aspects. They could not believe that 35 years later, the country's powers would be in the hands of an unparalleled criminal after Enver Hoxha. The country's powers would be in the hands of a traitor who would blacken national history for acts of treason. The man who would plunder Albania like no other in its history.
