Rama: Europe needs leadership, Albania is not afraid of big dreams
Edi Rama

The renowned German newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" has commented on Prime Minister Edi Rama's speech at the annual meeting of the German Eastern Business Association in Berlin, where the head of government presented the vision for Albania's economic development and European future.

According to German media, Edi Rama aims to make Albania prosperous through luxury tourism, while protests continue to develop because Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, is also involved in the planned investment projects.

Rama dedicated a large part of his speech to Albania's European integration process.

"Europe's enlargement is a geopolitical necessity. Albania aims to close all 33 negotiating chapters by the end of next year and achieve full EU membership before the end of this decade."

The Prime Minister, according to the newspaper, rejected proposals for partial or intermediate forms of membership, arguing that candidate countries should be fully integrated into European institutions. According to him, Europe needs political leadership and not endless bureaucratic debates.

During his speech, Prime Minister Rama also spoke about protests against luxury tourism projects planned on Albania's southern coast, including investments linked to Kushner.

Prime Minister Rama rejected accusations that environmental standards or property rights are being ignored. According to him, the island of Sazan, where Kushner plans a luxury resort, remains state property.

He stressed that final permits have not yet been granted and that all relevant authorities are still reviewing the projects.

The Prime Minister argued that high-end tourism offers a more sustainable development model than mass tourism.

"It brings in much higher revenues with fewer visitors," he said, describing Albania's ambition to become the "Pearl of Mediterranean Tourism."

According to the German journalist, Rama acknowledged that mass tourism also brings costs, especially for infrastructure development. Responding to criticism of the collaboration with Kushner, he stated that the government sees the project as an opportunity to attract large American investments and not as a political connection with Trump.

In conclusion, Rama stated that Albania should not be afraid of ambitious objectives.

"Efforts to hinder the country's development or its European future will fail, because 'Albania is not afraid of big dreams'."

Prime Minister Rama explained that the process remains under legal review and that anti-corruption institutions are also verifying the relevant procedures.
