As part of the campaign for the May 11 elections, Prime Minister Edi Rama has presented the Socialist Party's vision for sports.
In a meeting that took place today, where young people were also present, Rama said that today there are about 400 gyms in Albania that help about 12 thousand students in schools. He announced that 3 new projects have also been brought forward, which are the project for the stadiums of Vlora, Korça and Durrës.
"Years ago this scene was unimaginable. There were thorns here and physical education classes were deleted from the school curriculum, while today the whole sports panorama is different, we have nearly 400 gyms in Albania, where 85 percent are up to standards and today there are 12 thousand students who are engaged in sports activities in schools. More than that are the basis for a new sports culture of society, starting from school, we must increase this number and the number of other sports disciplines such as wrestling, weightlifting and up to chess, and we must increase the capacity of education and the number of coaches and improve the methodology.
"The infrastructure is in great need, we have brought forward 3 new projects for the stadiums of Vlora, Korça and Durrës that are in the competition phase for the private partner and we have started the process for the sports palace that needs to be transformed to host important finals. I believe that we cannot stay in place with just one athletics track," he said.
The socialist leader also brought to attention the investments related to the ranks of former Olympic champions. According to him, they are no longer unemployed and unpaid as they were before.
"Athletics is a key sport, where I really hope that we can find a way to support the athletics federation to enter schools. Finally, I am very relieved that we have solved the problem of former champions, where we no longer have champions wandering the streets. We have built a system of ranks in our Armed Forces that values them and gives them a clear life perspective and turns them into assets that serve the sport and serve the country, as examples in the armed forces, whether as mentors, advisors or coaches," said Rama.
Rama focused on the sponsorship law, which, according to him, should be discussed more seriously. Rama reiterated that they will also bring Rafa Nadal's tennis academy in Durres to Albania.
"We are very relieved that we have solved the problem of champions. Today there are no more champions wandering the streets. It is very clear that now, the budget for the Olympic Committee, which has taken an honorable position nationally and internationally, is insufficient, as it is for the multi-sport federations. We will certainly start next year with an increase in the budget of the Olympic Committee.
I think it's time to sit down and seriously discuss the sponsorship law. It hasn't been easy, but today it's possible. If today we have an example that was unimaginable a few years ago, of children learning to play in a team at one of the most famous schools such as Manchester City's, very soon we will have the entire infrastructure of the academy and school in Durrës, where, as we have discussed with the owners and technical directors of Manchester City, we will create a regional destination for football talents.
"We are working to create Rafa Nadal's tennis academy in Durrës. We have started discussions with the NBA about their academy. They want to create an academy in the region and they like to place it in Albania. We will make Durrës a destination for a complex with a sports academy," Rama said.
