Former Minister Arben Malaj has revealed details regarding internal debates in the Socialist Party and clashes with Prime Minister Edi Rama, raising strong accusations about the way the government and the party are run.
Malaj said that Rama is influenced by an approach that harms democracy. "Rama has been badly affected by a very serious disease for democracy, which is wiretapping," he declared.
He added that clashes with Rama began early on, especially over how the Socialist Party should be organized.
"My first debate with him was that the SP cannot be a military unit," said Malaj, accusing the prime minister of using surveillance methods upon coming to power.
According to him, the leadership of the SP has changed radically after 2005. "As soon as Rama came to power, he started using these eavesdropping devices, I don't know why he is so in love with secret services," Malaj said.
He also accused the prime minister of concentrating power and lacking internal rotation. "To self-proclaim himself the prime minister king in the fourth term," Malaj said, criticizing the long continuance in power.
Malaj stressed that Rama Rama aims to maintain power through contested methods. "Rama only seeks to survive and he is doing this through the criminal path of wiretapping," he declared.
Malaj also mentioned concrete episodes of internal tensions, referring to meetings and warnings against SP figures.
"That threatening meeting that Rama held... means that Rama has been badly affected by a very serious disease for democracy, which is wiretapping," he told "News 24".
"The SP, unlike the DP, has a division into mandates and different leaders. The DP was born and will probably die politically with the same party leader. Meanwhile, the SP, after 2005, when Rama came, changed 100% the way it would organize and lead the SP. My first debate with him was that the SP cannot be a military unit. Because as soon as Rama came to power, he started using these eavesdropping devices, I don't know why he is so in love with secret services.
We had a debate and it wasn't easy. Rotation happens, but not like in Albania where you have the first mandate, have more points in the second mandate and more votes in the 3rd mandate and declare yourself prime minister king in the 4th mandate. So my idea was that the SP should be modernized before coming to power. While Rama was of the idea that it should come to power and then modernize.
Rama made a pact with his Siamese brother Berisha and changed the Constitution. That threatening meeting that Rama held, that he told Damian, "I know where the things you're doing here are leading you," that he also told Spiropali, "How badly you speak about our government." He told the former Minister of the Interior that he curses at me in police stations means that Rama has been badly affected by a very serious disease for democracy, which is wiretapping. Rama took from Romania, the former head of Romania's secret services, I don't know what he needed it for. The scandal he made with McGonigal," Malaj said in his full speech.
