Prime Minister Rama has returned to his promises to purchase firefighting aircraft, helicopters and drones after the devastating consequences of the fires that swept Albania during the summer we left behind.
It is not the first time that Prime Minister Rama has promised to purchase firefighting aircraft. At the start of the electoral campaign, in March of this year, Rama declared that Albania would have two firefighting aircraft by summer, a promise that turned out to be a fraud.
Today, Rama declared at the end-of-year conference with journalists that the government has made funds available to purchase the first two firefighting aircraft.
He stated that starting in 2026, Albania will produce drones, armored vehicles, military uniforms or anti-drone systems. Rama added that funds have been allocated and the first two firefighting aircraft will be purchased very soon.
"This year has been the year of the rebirth of the military industry, which was dismantled in the early 90s because we were told that you don't need these because you have us. All countries need to have their own industrial base and Albania has started to do this, while we have also seen with great positivity a growing trend in the approach of young people to the Armed Forces, where the objective is for the active personnel to increase by 30% by the end of this mandate, there are 721 new recruits who have joined the Armed Forces this year alone. We have the best-paid army in the region, including Serbia. We will continue to increase the support with salaries of our military because our ambition is to reach the average of NATO armies in terms of financial support. This year finds us with a missile system, with 3 patrol ships that we have as a gift from Italy, finds us with air surveillance radars thanks to the cooperation with France.
Albania is a country producing military capacities, but also exporting military industrial capacities. The foundations of the Made in Albania defense industry have been laid. We will produce uniforms in our country and we will make it a reference point to produce uniforms for others. The Swedish army sews part of its uniforms in Albania, but with a contractual agreement with a private manufacturer. We will produce armored vehicles, ambulances, we will produce combat drones and anti-drone systems. The first 6 months of 2026 will also see the first products.
"They accuse us of a state company that we have established for the state, we have established it so that in any kind of approach from foreigners to Albania, our state gets its share, not as it was before, but the pots are boiling. We have made the fund available to purchase the first two firefighting aircraft ," said Rama.
