At the height of the debate about the project in Sazan and Zvërnec, Edi Rama chose the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party to deliver a defensive message against criticism and to present his political balance as a guarantee for the country's European future.
During his speech to the socialists gathered in "Italia" Square, Rama declared that Albania has never been for sale and that for him the country remains a "sacred trust", while attacking political opponents for the accusations that, according to him, they have leveled against the government over the years.
" When our opponents, old and young, distributed leaflets in cars, on windows and in houses before the elections that 110 million dollars in taxes had disappeared, that scum, brought to Albania by someone else before, not only has not received a single penny from the Albanian state, but is facing justice in Belgium, while his monstrous hydroelectric power plant has gone for scrap ," said Rama.
The Prime Minister then linked the Socialists' mandate to the European integration process, declaring that the Socialist Party has undertaken a historic mission.
" Since the Socialist Party (SP) took on the historic mission of joining Albania in the European Union, Albania has never been for sale. This country has never been a creature bowing down to anyone. The flag has never been a sheet of feigned patriotism, nor a cake to be offered. For me, Albania is a sacred trust in my eyes, mind and heart ," he declared.
In a more personal part of the speech, Rama also focused on his journey as head of the Socialist Party, recalling historical figures of the left and especially former Prime Minister Fatos Nano.
" I want to single out the historical leader, Fatos Nano. The pride he publicly expressed for me, even after our relationship went through dramatic phases, mainly for him, remains a special appreciation for me ," said the leader of the Socialists.
Rama also admitted that he has made mistakes during his years in power, but insisted that he has always acted with the conviction that he is serving the country.
" I haven't done everything right, I've made mistakes more than once. Although I never wanted to take revenge on anyone, I most likely did it unintentionally or with a wrong assessment ," he said.
At the end of the speech, the Prime Minister promised that he will continue to give everything for the Socialist Party and the European integration project.
" I will give the SP without reservation everything that is required of a leader and together with the SP we have raised the head of Albania and of every Albanian who today, wherever he is, says I am Albanian, I am proud. And together we will take Albania to the peak where the sun rises from where it sets ," Rama concluded.
The prime minister's statements come at a time when the government is facing the largest protests in recent months, while Rama himself is trying to convince the socialists that the path taken by the Socialist Party remains the only guarantee to lead the country towards the European Union.
