The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Agron Gjekmarkaj, described the findings of the US State Department's report on the investment climate in Albania as alarming data.
The Democratic Party MP emphasized the high level of corruption, organized crime, and money laundering in a massive informal economy, which are harming economic development in the country and hindering serious investments from international partners.
He underlines that this report fully justifies the opposition's positions and its repeated warnings, starting with President Sali Berisha.
"The latest report by the US Department of State on the investment climate in Albania confirms the concerns that the opposition has raised for years against the government of Edi Rama. The data is alarming: widespread corruption, organized crime, money laundering and a massive informal economy are severely damaging the country's economic development and are hindering serious investments from international partners. Albania, according to the report, remains a difficult place to do business, with a climate that discourages investors and favors clientelism linked to power.
This report fully justifies the positions of the opposition and especially the continuous denunciations of its leader, Sali Berisha. For years, it has been warned that this is how a country collapses when free and fair elections are destroyed, when the government seizes the institutions and uses the administration to protect crime and money laundering. This is what happens when the economic dynamics are determined by cartels, and not the basic needs of a society that struggles for survival and in many cases abandons the country. We are no longer the only ones saying it – the US State Department is officially saying it. America is no longer speaking diplomatically, but is screaming about the danger that this government represents for the economy and democracy in Albania.
The opposition is determined to build a new alternative for Albania, with an open, transparent and competitive economy. We believe in a state that guarantees legal certainty for investors, that supports the local workforce and that puts any form of abuse or corruption before the law. This report is a wake-up call for all Albanian political actors and citizens: change is no longer a choice – it is a necessity,” Gjekamrkaj wrote in response.
