Record, 58 MPs per 1 million inhabitants, poor Albania surpasses rich Germany

In a comparative analysis, Albania ranks among the countries with the highest number of legislators in relation to the number of population.

In relation to the resident population, the May 11 elections will produce 58 deputies per 1 million inhabitants. This is a very unbalanced ratio, if we consider the practice in other European countries and the Gross Domestic Product of our country.

Germany, an economic superpower in Europe and beyond, has only 8.5 MPs per 1 million inhabitants, France also has 8.6 MPs per 1 million inhabitants.

Italy, where the high number of MPs is often a topic of discussion, has 10.5 MPs per million inhabitants. Greece has 28 MPs per million inhabitants, but even this number is almost half the size of Albania's over-sized parliament.

The position of deputy is highly coveted not only because of the influence, but also because of the huge benefits.

According to the 2025 budget, the Assembly has a fund of 1.9 billion lek available, of which 1.2 billion lek or 120 million euros are dedicated to legislative activity.

If we distribute this amount among 140 MPs, then one MP costs us about 7 thousand euros each month, which includes salaries, per diems, travel and other benefits. / Inside Story
