The Justice Crisis: The Prime Minister Attacks, the Supreme Court Chews on Words, the Opposition Speaks in Half a Voice...
Today, the justice system in Albania became the main stage of a well-known play, where political actors and independent institutions appear as in a tragic comedy. Prime Minister Edi Rama has been attacking judges by name for several days, for decisions that the government does not like. After prosecutor Elsa Gjeli for the operation in Theth, yesterday another judge was attacked, while today Rama went to a higher level by publicly attacking the High Judicial Council, the most important body of the Albanian judiciary.
The Supreme Court reacted with a lukewarm statement, speaking of "public and private entities" without daring to mention Rama's name. This stance only further emboldened the prime minister, who in a harsh reaction told the members of the Supreme Court that they should not deal with him, because his judge was the people. In fact, this is a dangerous precedent. A prime minister who sees himself above independent institutions and delegitimizes them with public attacks.
On the other hand, the opposition once again showed its weakness. Only Gazment Bardhi and Jorida Tabaku dared to react, accusing Rama of intimidating justice and behaving like an “anti-law”. The rest remained silent, while the media close to Sali Berisha went even further, attacking the KLGJ itself and calling it afraid, since it did not mention Rama’s name. This contrast makes it seem as if Rama and Berisha, despite their daily rhetoric, are walking in parallel in a game where justice always loses.
In this panorama, an important element cannot be left out: the silence of the US. In the past, every political attack on judges received an immediate reaction from the American Embassy. It was the shield that gave the judiciary the courage not to give in to political pressure. Since January, with the arrival of the Trump administration, Washington has no longer interfered in internal affairs. Today, on the very day that Vanhorn went to Rama's office, the prime minister's strongest clash with the Supreme Court of Justice took place. A coincidence that clearly shows that politics has taken heart from the silence of its strategic partner.
At the end of the day, the “justice-politics gala” is clear: a prime minister who mocks judges and sees them as an obstacle to his power; a Supreme Court that is afraid to mention its name; an opposition that speaks in a low voice and a US that is no longer intervening. In the meantime, Albanian justice is unprotected and citizens are left without guarantees that the law is above politics.
