Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted to the opposition's accusations that he had not taken a position on the statement of Serbian Minister Snezhana Paunovic, who stated that, if she had been in Slobodan Milosevic's place in 1998, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo."
Rama said that it is not the duty of every person or institution to react to every statement made in Serbia.
" The idea that every person with a public voice, every institution and authority, must react to every idiocy said in Serbian - even by characters whose existence was known only to their family until they expressed the idiocy - is an idea that shows how little respect those who set the trap and demand to know why this or that person did not react have for themselves and their country ," said Rama.
The Prime Minister added that Albania has reacted institutionally through the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, while also criticizing the opposition for the way in which, according to him, it is handling this issue.
" We have reacted through the foreign minister, as a self-respecting state does, and anyone who expects us to turn into a hysterical chorus every time a bird chirping in Belgrade speaks nonsense has come to the wrong address. It is enough to look at the reactionaries of the moment from Tirana, how they find a dead horse to pose for selfies of fighters on the front line, and you immediately understand why their kind deserve only the next round of mercy, while if you want to take your side, you should find time to read them too ," Rama said.
The prime minister's reaction comes after Serbia's Minister of State Administration and Local Self-Government, Snezhana Paunovic, stated during an interview that, if she had been "free like Milosevic" in 1998, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo."
The statement caused strong reactions in Kosovo and Albania. Paunovic later apologized, claiming that her statement had been taken out of context and that she had expressed a personal opinion, while Kosovo authorities declared her persona non grata.
