During the US Senate hearing on Donald Trump's nominee for ambassador to Albania, Senator Chris Murphy raised concerns about the Trump family's investments and interests in the Balkans. He stated that consultants close to the US president are earning millions of dollars from the Albanian opposition, while warning that US embassies should not be used for business favors or private interests....
The Trump family's investments and interests in the Balkans have become part of the debate in the US Senate during the hearing for the nominee for US ambassador to Albania, retired general Eric Wendt.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy raised concerns about what he described as the use of closeness to power by the Trump family and the president's allies to economically benefit the region, directly mentioning Albania.
" We are seeing an increasingly disturbing list of cases in the Balkans where the Trump family and political allies of the president are using their proximity to power to enrich themselves. There is also a developing story in Albania, where some of the president's political consultants are earning millions of dollars advising the opposition ," Murphy declared during the hearing in the Foreign Relations Committee.
The US senator also mentioned projects linked to Trump's name in the region, including the plan to build a hotel in Belgrade and investments in the energy sector by people close to the US president.
Murphy demanded guarantees from the ambassadorial candidate that the US embassy in Tirana would not be used to favor private interests or businesses connected to the president.
" I want a personal commitment from you that you will not be involved in facilitating businesses that are not in the interest of the United States, but in the interest of people close to the president. Our embassy in Albania should fight corruption, not help it ," said the Democratic senator.
On the other hand, Eric Wendt stated that he was unaware of the Trump family's personal investments in Albania, but emphasized that as ambassador he will treat all American businesses equally.
" My job as US ambassador is to support American businesses. All businesses should be treated equally, without favoritism or discrimination based on specific individuals. I want to ensure that the rule of law is respected and there is a level playing field for all ," Wendt declared.

Chris Murphy: Faleminderit shumë, zoti kryetar. Gjeneral Wendt, në rajonin e Ballkanit po shohim një listë gjithnjë e më shqetësuese rastesh ku familja Trump dhe aleatë politikë të presidentit po përpiqen të përdorin afërsinë me pushtetin për t’u pasuruar. Është rasti i hotelit Trump që planifikohej të ndërtohej në Beograd, projekt që u përfshi në një hetim të madh korrupsioni për leje që dyshohet se nuk duhej të ishin dhënë. Ka gjithashtu rastin e aleatit të Trump, Michael Flynn, dhe avokatit personal të fushatës së tij, të cilët morën miratim për ndërtimin e një gazsjellësi me vlerë miliona dollarë në rajon, ndonëse nuk kishin asnjë eksperiencë në infrastrukturën energjetike.
Po zhvillohet edhe një histori në Shqipëri, ku disa konsulentë politikë të presidentit po fitojnë miliona dollarë duke këshilluar opozitën. Shqipëria ka bërë progres në luftën kundër korrupsionit, por unë shqetësohem se diplomatëve tanë në rajon mund t’u kërkohet të lehtësojnë kontrata që nuk janë në interesin më të mirë të Shteteve të Bashkuara, por që vendosin para në xhepat e vetë Trump, familjes dhe miqve të tij.
Dua një angazhim personal nga ju që nuk do të përfshiheni në facilitimin e bizneseve që nuk janë në interes të SHBA-ve, por në interes të njerëzve pranë presidentit. Gjithashtu dua angazhimin tuaj se do të vazhdoni përpjekjet tona të kahershme për të luftuar korrupsionin në Shqipëri. Shqipëria është një mike e madhe e SHBA-ve, por ende ka nevojë për progres dhe ambasada jonë duhet të luftojë korrupsionin, jo ta ndihmojë atë.
Eric Wendt: Faleminderit senator për pyetjen. Nuk jam i njohur me investime personale të familjes Trump në Shqipëri, por për çdo pyetje që lidhet me ndërveprimet e tyre personale do t’ju referoja vetë atyre. Detyra ime si ambasador i SHBA-ve është të mbështes bizneset amerikane. Nëse ato zhvillojnë aktivitet në Shqipëri, për mua të gjitha bizneset amerikane janë të barabarta dhe nuk duhet të kenë trajtim preferencial apo diskriminues bazuar te individë të caktuar.
My job is to make sure that things are done the right way, that the rule of law is respected and that there is a level playing field for everyone. As for corruption, I think that SPAK, the special structure against corruption and organized crime, from what I have read, has been very effective. I look forward to being on the ground to really understand what is working and what is not.
Chris Murphy: I think the phrase you used, 'to ensure a level playing field,' is the most important thing. Because right now it doesn't seem like the playing field is level. It seems like if you're a friend of the president, you get advantages from the embassy to push through business deals. Of course, your job is to protect American interests, but we want to make sure that every American business, not just those connected to the president, has the opportunity to do business in the Balkans.
Eric Wendt: Thank you, Senator. I give you my commitment that I will support all American businesses equally.
