Analyst Fitim Zekthi commented on the political situation in the country as Albania heads for the May 11 parliamentary elections.
Invited to the News24 studio, Zekthi said political leaders of the main parties are intensifying their rhetoric as the elections approach. He accused both Prime Minister Edi Rama and DP leader Sali Berisha of governing in a vacuum.
" The opposition has turned into a non-political entity without a concrete project ," declared Zekthi, adding that its unification cannot be achieved using figures who have been part of the political scene for 30 years.
Zekthi evaluated the work of SPAK as a positive innovation, stressing that the body has launched investigations against high-level politicians, an unprecedented action in the country's history. According to him, public support for SPAK is a clear indicator of Albanians' desire for justice and transparency.
He criticized calls for the unification of the opposition as shallow and without a concrete strategy.
" The calls for unification with the reason that they will defeat Rama are without result ," said Zekthi, adding that "politics is a matter of seriousness and experience accumulated over years."
To ensure real change, Zekthi proposed a reformation of the opposition, suggesting that the current leaders should step down and a new team with new ideas and figures be created.
" We must find the strength to surpass ourselves in the opposition and not the strength to perform acrobatics so that the people do not understand anything. The Albanian political class does not enjoy the support of the people because year after year there has been a union after accusations against each other.
It doesn't work that way and it shouldn't. The only way to show that they surpass themselves is to sit together and admit that they have been burdened due to mental and spiritual impotence to admit mistakes and produce a candidate for prime minister who is none of who they are now. He will also make the list for deputies with 2,000 people and 140 will be selected from them. This is the only way it will be done ", he said.
