Albania last for press freedom in the region, MP: Alfred Peza dismissed 146

Democratic MP Ina Zhupa has spoken about the report published by "Reporters Without Borders" as she declares that critical media are facing government attacks.

Zhupa says that Rama is a threat to the media and journalists as he does not like the questions addressed to him.

Furthermore, the democratic deputy also spoke about the RTSH scandal, where, according to her, the politician Alfred Peza was put at the head of the public television, breaking every rule of law.

Zhupa writes that he dismissed 146 media workers, most of them journalists with 20-30 years of experience in this television and media.

"On World Press Freedom Day, less freedom, less security, less well-being for journalists in Albania.

The organization "Reporters Without Borders" estimates that the environment for freedom of the press in Albania "is difficult". Albania has lost three places compared to a year ago, when it was listed 96th, thus marking the biggest drop in the Index in the countries of the Western Balkans.

From January 1, 2023 to May 1, 2024, 30 attacks were committed against journalists and the media in Albania.

Prime Minister Rama himself is abusive, threatening and blackmailing journalists whose questions he does not like. It has created an environment of lynching for journalists and this is reflected in the behavior of all public officials who do not respond to journalists or lynch them.

Politician Alfred Peza has been put at the head of public media RTSH, breaking every legal rule. He dismissed 146 media workers, most of them journalists with 20-30 years of experience in television and media.

For the first time in 2023, the constitution that guarantees freedom of the press, protection for the confidentiality of sources was ignored and the prosecution seized materials of the investigative journalist Elton Qyno and exercised control and pressure on him.

In relation to the safety of journalists, the Albanian Parliament voted against my legal proposal for more protection for journalists and media workers, who were beaten and raped because of their duty in the service of the public interest.

In March 2023, the headquarters of Top Channel was the target of an unprecedented attack with an automatic weapon that killed one of the security guards, and we still have no one to blame for this.

Critical media also face government attacks linked to other businesses of media owners. While state funding through advertising is allocated as a reward for those who do not have critical attitudes towards the government.

As a member of the media commission, I judge that the work of our commission leaves much to be desired, in 3 years nothing in this direction. My last request for a meeting with exactly this focus was rejected because it affected their prime minister, the biggest offender of the media.  Free media is the breath of democracy, silence kills democracy", says Ina Zhupa.
