Preliminary hearing for Veliaj today, mayor present at GJKKO

The next preliminary hearing for the "Veliaj" case is being held today at the GJKKO, with the mayor of Tirana, his wife Ajola Xoxa and others as defendants.

The Court is expected to decide whether or not the file will go to trial, or whether it will be returned to SPAK for further investigation.

The Mayor of Tirana has temporarily left the Durrës detention cells today. Veliaj has been escorted to the premises of the Special Court in the capital to be present at the court session of the preliminary examination of the file against him and his co-defendants.

The previous preliminary hearing was postponed because the defense requested time to familiarize itself with the case files, and the Court granted their request.

Earlier, Veliaj had asked the GJKKO to provide him with a physical copy of the file so that he could prepare for his defense. Veliaj argues that he was not allowed to read any pages and that the USB that was handed over to the lawyers cannot be used in detention.

Veliaj has been in custody since February and is accused of money laundering, undeclared assets, passive corruption in 9 episodes, abuse of office and bringing prohibited items into the cell. His wife Ajola Xoxa is accused of undeclared assets, concealment of income and money laundering. Also included in this file is former socialist MP Klotilda Bushka, who is accused of actions that hinder the discovery of the truth.

On November 3, the Constitutional Court ruled in favor of Erion Veliaj, leaving him in office as mayor of Tirana. The Constitutional Court overturned the government's decision to dismiss him and annulled President Bajram Begaj's decree calling elections in Tirana. On November 27, he again appealed to the Constitutional Court, requesting the annulment of the decisions of the GJKKO, the Special Appeals Court and the Supreme Court on the measure of 'prison arrest'.
